24 Days, 2 Countries, 1 Brave Traveler: Helping Diane Explore Southeast Asia
Last updated: June 24, 2026
Planning an amazing trip is always a special experience, but sometimes you get lucky and work with someone who makes it feel like an adventure for both of you. That’s exactly what happened when I had the joy of planning a 24-day journey through Vietnam and Thailand for Diane Akaka—an amazing, warm-hearted solo traveler from Honolulu, Hawaii, celebrating her 69th year with a deep curiosity and love for new experiences. The thing that impressed me the most was her bravery when she decided to travel half of the Earth all by herself for nearly a month.
My job was to ensure she felt completely comfortable every step of the way, taking care of everything from her long-haul flights to selecting cozy hotels and unforgettable tours, and ensuring her pickups and drop-offs were smooth and hassle-free. Luckily, with my effort and dedication, I became her go-to person and even her online partner throughout her adventures, since we shared every moment, from enjoying the street food in Bangkok, cruising those fragrant rivers in Vietnam, and soaking up all the vibrant energy both countries have to offer.
But the best travel stories aren’t just about the big highlights; sometimes, it’s the little unexpected moments that make the best memories. During the trip, Diane ran into a few bumps like tech troubles with an online class, a surprise illness in Vietnam, and even a last-minute class cancellation that almost messed with her flight home. Every time, I was there to back her up with fixing her computer glitches, connecting her with great medical care, canceling tours she couldn’t make, and rebooking flights when plans changed. Before she left Hanoi, I stopped by with a small gift as a little thank-you and a reminder of the friendship these trips always build.
What made this trip special was the friendship that grew while making those memories together. Diane wasn’t just a client; she became a friend I could laugh with, support, and celebrate every new adventure. Trust is everything in travel, and I’m so grateful Diane trusted me every step of the way.
To Diane: thanks for making these trips about more than just plans. Here’s to many more laughs, discoveries, and stories on the road ahead!
