Carolyn's Vietnam trip — cruising the limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay

Carolyn’s Vietnam trip began with a simple wish: two friends from Sydney wanted a first, relaxed look at Vietnam, without the stress of piecing it all together themselves. They left the planning to me, and together we shaped a route through the north and the centre of the country — Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang and Hoi An — with the flights, hotels and day tours all arranged end to end.

Carolyn’s trip at a glance

  • Travellers: two friends from Sydney (Carolyn and her travel companion)
  • Route: Hanoi → Ha Long Bay → Da Nang & Ba Na Hills → Hoi An
  • Trip style: a relaxed first overview of Vietnam, fully arranged
  • Highlights: the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills, a Ha Long Bay cruise, lantern boats in Hoi An, the guard ceremony in Hanoi

First stop: settling into Hanoi

Their journey opened in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital and its most characterful city. We kept the first day gentle — time to shake off the flight from Sydney and wander the tree-lined streets, the lakes and the busy Old Quarter at their own pace.

One quiet highlight was the changing of the guard, where honour guards in crisp white uniforms march in perfect step. It is a dignified, very Vietnamese moment, and a lovely calm start before the bigger scenery further on.

Out on Ha Long Bay

From the capital we headed east to the water. Boarding their cruise boat felt like the trip properly beginning — a slow glide out among the limestone karsts, past floating fishing villages and quiet coves where kayaks slip in toward the caves.

Ha Long Bay is the picture most people carry home from Vietnam, and it earns it. If you are mapping your own route, there is more on Ha Long Bay here.

Da Nang, the Golden Bridge and Ba Na Hills

Central Vietnam came next, and with it one of the trip’s biggest wow moments. Up in the hills above Da Nang, the Golden Bridge curves out from the mountainside, held aloft by two enormous stone hands — it is every bit as striking in person as in the photos.

Ba Na Hills around it is a whole day out on its own, with a long cable-car ride, French-style gardens and golden statues to explore. Travellers who love this central stretch often pair Da Nang with Hoi An and Hue — our Central Vietnam 5-day tour follows a similar path.

Kevin’s pick: ride the cable car up to Ba Na Hills early in the morning — the crowds are thinner and the Golden Bridge is far easier to photograph before the mist and the day-trippers roll in.

Evening lanterns in Hoi An

A short drive south brought them to Hoi An, the old trading town that many travellers name as their favourite stop. By day it is all mustard-yellow walls and tailor shops; after dark, the Hoai River fills with lantern boats and little floating candles set adrift for luck.

It is a soft, unhurried way to end a trip. For more ideas around town, browse our Hoi An guides.

What made Carolyn’s Vietnam trip easy

What I am proudest of is not any single sight, but how smoothly it all held together. I planned the itinerary carefully, arranged every flight, hotel and tour, and made sure each leg connected to the next so there were no anxious gaps.

Just as importantly, I stayed in close contact throughout — answering questions quickly and offering advice whenever it helped. Good communication is what lets travellers relax and simply enjoy where they are.

“Nothing was too much trouble.”

Hearing that from Carolyn and her friend, along with their 5-star rating, was the best reward I could ask for. It means the care and support I try to give really landed.

Tips from Carolyn’s trip

  • Bring layers for the north: Hanoi and Ha Long can feel cooler and damper than the tropical centre, especially in the mornings.
  • Allow time on Ha Long Bay: a cruise is the highlight — give it space rather than rushing through in a few hours.
  • Go early to the Golden Bridge: beat the crowds and the mist for the clearest views and photos.
  • Stay for a Hoi An evening: the lantern boats only come alive after dark, so don’t leave the same day.
  • Let someone connect the legs: having flights, hotels and tours booked as one trip removes almost all the stress.

Quick FAQ from Carolyn’s trip

How many days do you need for northern and central Vietnam?

A week to ten days is comfortable for Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang and Hoi An. That gives you a couple of days in the north, a cruise on the bay, and time to slow down in the centre without feeling rushed.

Is Ha Long Bay worth a cruise?

Yes. Seeing the karsts from the water — rather than a quick look from shore — is what makes Ha Long Bay memorable, and it was a clear highlight of Carolyn’s trip.

Is Vietnam a good first trip for two friends travelling together?

It is a friendly, easy country to explore, and with flights, hotels and tours arranged as one trip you can simply enjoy it. That is exactly how these two Sydney friends travelled, and it worked beautifully.
