The Danas’ family trip to Sapa was the heart of a 17-day journey across Vietnam that took them from a Golden Bridge in the centre of the country to misty peaks in the far north.

Starting in the centre: the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills

Before the mountains of the north, the Danas’ 17 days began in Central Vietnam, with a cable car ride up to Ba Na Hills and its famous Golden Bridge, held aloft on a pair of giant stone hands. It’s the kind of stop that gets the whole family reaching for their phones — and for two brothers travelling together, it made for one of the warmest photos of the whole trip.

The French Village at the top, with its painted sky ceilings and old-world arches, gave the family a proper group photo moment before they turned north towards Ha Noi and Sapa.

A family trip to Sapa that lived up to every word

If you ask the Danas what stood out most, it’s Sapa. The train up to the Northwest mountains was, in their own words, an unforgettable adventure — and once they arrived, the peaceful villages and cool, fresh mountain air did the rest.

“Sapa was phenomenal and the guide is amazing.”

Standing out above the valley with the terraced slopes falling away below was one of those moments that’s hard to describe back home — the family took countless photos trying anyway. Sapa’s playful side got a look-in too, with the boys and their dad clambering over the giant carved-tree sculptures at one of the photo gardens dotted around the town.

Hands-on cooking, and warm goodbyes in Ha Noi

One of the trip’s most hands-on moments came at a family cooking session: rolling and tasting traditional rice paper rolls together, with Sammy walking the kids through Vietnamese cuisine step by step. It was simple, messy and exactly the sort of activity that made the children light up — a proper hands-on introduction to the food, not just a meal put in front of them.

Perfect weather held for the whole stretch, and kind words kept coming for the local guides who looked after the Danas in Ha Noi and Sapa — Ms Phuong and Dung Tu, both singled out for the care they took teaching the kids about Vietnamese culture and daily life along the way.

Tips from the Dana family’s trip

Pack layers for Sapa: the mountain air is fresh and cool even when Central Vietnam is warm, so a jumper for the early mornings and viewpoints goes a long way.
Take the train, don’t skip it: the ride up to Sapa was one of the Danas’ favourite parts of the whole trip — treat it as part of the adventure, not just transport.
Book a hands-on food experience in Ha Noi: rolling your own rice paper rolls is a brilliant way to get kids curious about the local cuisine.
Let the kids climb: Sapa’s photo gardens, with their giant carved-tree sculptures, are a great way to burn off energy between viewpoints.
