Guiding a family trip to Vietnam is one of my favourite kinds of work, and Wendy’s family of four from Australia made their 12 days a real delight. Their adventure spanned Halong Bay’s emerald water, lantern-glow Hoi An, Da Nang’s beaches, Ho Chi Minh City’s buzzing streets, the Cu Chi Tunnels and the serene Mekong Delta — every stop full of culture and natural wonder.

A family trip to Vietnam that started with a smooth save

Their arrival in Hanoi set a positive tone despite a hiccup: they’d booked a direct Vietjet SkyBoss flight, but the airline switched it to transit legs with a long delay. Everyone raved about the SkyBoss lounge, though — plush seating, gourmet bites and top-shelf drinks turned the wait into a luxurious preview of Vietnam. I made sure the airport pickup was seamless and wove in extras like a Hanoi cyclo tour through the Old Quarter, blending street food and Train Street thrills.

Being on hand for the family meant the world to me — quick replies to their questions kept things stress-free. When the weather nudged a Sapa trek indoors, we pivoted smoothly to local markets, hill-tribe shopping and herbal teas. From kayaking in Lan Ha Bay to basket boats in Hoi An and a Mekong homestay, every detail had personal care.

The little moments that make it home

What moved me deepest was the family’s gratitude for the thoughtful attention that made travel feel like home. It’s not just tours — it’s crafting bonds and stories that last.

“It’s not just tours — it’s crafting bonds and stories that last.”

When I met them in Hanoi, they even brought me a bag full of gifts: a bottle of good red wine, a couple of packs of Tim Tams, and a cute stuffed koala. They truly made my day — and made me love my job even more than before.

Kevin’s pick: for families, kayaking Lan Ha Bay is the winner — quieter than the main Halong routes, and the kids (and parents) never forget paddling among the karsts.

Tips from Wendy’s family trip

  • Keep a guide on call. Flight switches and weather happen — quick replies turn a hiccup into a non-event.
  • Mix active with easy. Kayaks, basket boats and homestays keep kids engaged between the big sights.
  • Have a wet-weather plan. If a Sapa trek is rained out, markets and hill-tribe visits are a lovely swap.
  • Twelve days suits a family. Enough to go north to south without exhausting anyone.
